On the 8th March 1945, a number of magicians living in and around York were called to a meeting in the Mansion House York, at the invitation of the Lord Mayor Councillor Mr. H.C. De Burgh, who himself was a magician. The purpose of this meeting was to form a Society of Magicians in the City. Six men were welcomed by the Lord Mayor and together they formed ‘The York Society of Magicians’
The Society flourished, first making its Headquarters at the Rechabite Building in York, and more recently at Dringhouses Sports Club, York.
Our society would also like to welcome any members from other magical clubs that would enjoy visiting any of our open events.
We are still going from strength to strength with an ever increasing member list and an active junior section. We meet the second Wednesday of every month. with a varied line up of lectures, dealer demonstrations, themed member nights as well as our annual dinner, supper and competition.
The society has a council who help organise the events of the year and sort out all the administrative duties. This year they are:
To apply for membership you can use the contact form to get in touch with our secretary who will inform the council. Prospective members will then have a meeting with the council and if it is felt they are eligible to join they will be invited to an audition in front of members who will vote on whether to allow membership.
